My life gets hectic and messy sometimes. It can be very easy for me to forget or discard those moments. Instead, having a way to record these moments, keeps me grounded and helps me gain more clarity through that turbulence.
I’ve read that some people who journal actually recorded their entire family history! They left some memories in a journal that their descendants might one day cherish. Recently I’ve been reading a journal of my great-grandmother. I’m glad she took the time to write down all those stories; it lets me understand the common struggles we all go through. AND, her struggles and solutions helped me with my own.
Writing your entire family history might seem a bit much for you, but it has worked for some. I’m certainly not saying that you have to write an autobiography. I’m just saying that I see how much I have grown when I look back at stuff I wrote. In hindsight, I usually appreciate having gone through those events. Your journaling doesn’t have to be complex though. Journaling can be as simple as making a grocery list. I actually get serenity from making and using lists.
Understanding Yourself and Your Life Helps You Gain More Clarity
One of the benefits of journaling, besides stress reduction, is helping me gain more clarity. Writing in a journal helps me understand my life and myself better. It helps me gain more clarity regarding my behavior – around character defects I turn to over and over. This new wisdom gives me awareness of defective behaviors and traits I wasn’t completely aware of until I wrote them down. In addition, I have discovered some of my biggest stress triggers through this process… and I’ve resolved many of them. It’s an important part of my recovery process. I’m betting journaling will help you find and change some of your triggers and defective behaviors and traits as well.
So now what?
My Free Gift to Help You in Your Addiction Recovery
Life easily overwhelmed me at the beginning of my addiction recovery. A counselor in rehab gave me the idea that journaling could help me sort things out. Even though I wasn’t convinced back then, I decided to try out this journaling thing and was surprised with the results. My stress level is minimal today compared to back then. But my stress hasn’t magically gone away just because I stopped using. Journaling is still an invaluable way for me to get some relief. Now I want my readers to experience this way of relieving stress.
